When a campaign underperforms, the first instinct is to change the ad: new creative, new headline, new offer. Often the real issue sits one step earlier. The campaign was shown to people who were never going to buy.

Start with who buys, not who clicks

Clicks are cheap signals. Buyers leave different traces: the questions they ask in communities, the publications they trust, the tools they already use. Mapping those traces gives you a far sharper picture than a demographic profile.

  • Interview recent customers about how they found you
  • List the communities and publishers your buyers read
  • Note the words buyers use, not the words your team uses

Segment before you scale

Different segments need different messages. A developer evaluating an AI tool cares about documentation and pricing. Their manager cares about risk and time saved. One campaign for both usually convinces neither.

Spend a little time on research first, and every euro of ad spend afterwards works harder.
